On April 26, 2021, USGBC and GBCI Canada convened the sustainability community for the 2021 Canada Town Hall. It was an opportunity engage virtually with local leaders and share updates from our work for a healthier, resilient, and a more equitable and sustainable world.
Both Thomas Mueller, CEO of GBCI Canada and Mahesh Ramanujam, President & CEO of USGBC reflected on the past year and underlined the latest LEED developments and their impact on the local market. Mr. Ramanujam shared USGBC’s Healthy People and Healthy Places strategy and Dave Witek showed how the Arc platform can help make performance measurement accessible for all.
Along with the event, we shared the Canada The Canada Town Hall Report. This year, Canada ranked second in world (outside of the U.S.) in LEED certification and has with nearly 14,000 LEED Professionals. Through the Canada Green Building Council, there are more than 1,000 member organizations across the country.
Canada is also home to eight LEED Fellows (GBCI’s highest credential designation) who are pushing the boundaries of green building by promoting sustainability, health, equity, and resilience in their communities.
The efforts of the green building community in Canada are aiding the transition to a low-carbon economy. Things are also changing at the government level, with encouraging announcements made over the last few months designed to help achieve net-zero emissions in Canada by 2050. In addition to net-zero commitments enacted at the federal level, Canadian corporations are establishing new efficiency measures to ensure drastic reductions on carbon emissions through the Zero Carbon Building Standard and LEED Zero programs.
